To start, growing up my family didn't have much money. In the winter, my dad would cut trees and sell it for fire wood. In the summer, he would get odd jobs like, working on a dairy farm. He would also go and cut tobacco for farmers who payed $2.00 up to $5.00 an hour.
My mother worked a full time job at a factory making ceramic tile. She also cooked, cleaned, and raised my sister, my brother, and myself while trying to make ends meet.
In 1991 we moved to Alabama to try to make a better life for our family. That is when my dad got into selling anything he could at flea markets and other places to make money. He later found a wholesale company where he could buy womens jewelry very cheap and make a good profit selling it.
When my brother and I would get out of school we would help our dad sell jewelry door to door. On the weekends we would go and set up at flea markets and sell jewelry and other things to make money.
My dad would take half of what we made and re-invest it back in the jewelry over and over. He later took it a step further and found a place where he could get new womens clothing wholesale and make even better money selling those.
While all this was going my mother was still hard at work keeping our house together. She got a job at a sewing factory and worked there for little over a year. She did what ever she could when she could.
In 1993 we made enough money to open our own wholesale company. We all worked together and within 5 years we were selling to shops all over the United States. We also become affiliated with Wal-Mart and sell to over 30 locations all over the southeast.
It was almost like we were in some kind of dream. But no it wasn't a dream it was real! Like my dad would always say, "if you live it, breath it, and sleep it, you can be successful in what ever you do."
We sold that business in 1998 and bought a 44,000 square ft building and opened a antique mall. We filled it with over 300 vender's selling anything from antiques to new and used items. In 2005 we bought an old Wal-Mart building with over 65,000 square feet and opened a second antique mall with over 400 vender's.
Since 1993 we've been successful with our family business. But we were so determined to make our business be successful that we didn't have time for each other as a family. We wanted to be able to spend more time as a
family and do things together, instead we were becoming more like business partners. So we hired employees to take our places at our malls.
